Beware! Hindi play Treadmill might just mirror your life
You came to a big city to pursue soaring dreams, but got into the grind and ended up realizing that everything is meaningless.
If this sounds familiar then joining the characters of Treadmill, a Hindi play and sharing their experiences may be a breather. Produced by Indian Ensemble Productions, the play mirrors the lives of urbanites and their maladies.
"It is a metaphorical play about people trying to make a new life and adjusting to the pace of city life. Then sometimes they find that they are losing out on the present moments," Abhishek Majumdar, the director.
The play revolves around the lives of Charitra and Pallavi, a newly married, young couple, who have recently moved to Mumbai dreaming of a rosy future.
But life turns bitter, when their wants from life start differing and a harmonious co-existence becomes difficult. Petty issues like setting up the house according to their individual tastes become a bone of contention and the marital bliss is lost.
"Here the fundamental differences between a man and a woman come forward. A gap is created between them because of Charitra's constant urge to run forward," says Majumdar.
The play reaches a stage when the marriage seems to be on the verge of a breakdown and then enters a storyteller. He takes the protagonist down memory lane to his childhood and his life in a small town.

In the course of the journey, Charitra meets his mother, a tailor, a shopkeeper and many other characters.

Charitra keeps on fleeting between the past and the present. Three actors play nine characters in the play that was originally written as a monologue by Sandeep Shikhar.

All these characters at some point in life had shared something meaningful with Charitra. However, the name of storyteller remains a mystery.
"I can't give the name away as the character is introduced at a very critical point in the play," Majumdar says.
Treadmill takes you to a world of young professionals, who leave their patterned, small town lives to embrace their ambitions and end missing out on the true moments of joy.
