Switzerlandu00a0reminds us of the Alps, the chocolates and one Mr Roger Federer. And even though the European country has made a foray into the sporting arena, especially in winter sports, the last sport that anyone would associate with the picturesque country is cricket.
However, the perception is set to change on Independence Day when 12 former Test cricketers will play a five-overs-a-side match on a specially made 18-yard strip on snow in the Alps.
The match organised by Beyond Boundaries, an Indian sports travel company, in association with Jungfraunbahen (Swiss Railways) and Swiss International Airlines will be a first-of-a-kind in many ways.
"Cricket has been played on ice before, but never on snow," Jaideep Sinh Parmar, Executive Director, Beyond Boundaries, said at a media briefing yesterday. "And it will be the first time cricket will be played in Switzerland."
The match will be played on a plane created 11,333 feet above sea level at one of the most popular glaciers in Switzerland.
While Kapil Dev, Roger Binny, Syed Kirmani, Sandeep Patil, Anshuman Gaekwad and Ajay Jadeja will form Team India, their opponents, the All Stars, include Alvin Kallicharran, Geoff Howarth, John Emburey, Chris Broad, Collis King and Neal Radford. MAK Pataudi and Farokh Engineer will don the umpire's hat.
