The CBI team from Delhi was in the city to inspect the contents of some of the Congress MP's bank lockers, and when it reached ICICI Bank near Kalmadi's residence later in the day, his friends made sure they were there too.
The recent CWG had been in the news almost every day over allegations of large-scale corruption. Kalmadi also faced accusations of financial misdeeds in the scandal.
The CBI team visited Kalmadi's house before inspecting the bank lockers to take Kalmadi's wife Meera with them, as sources said the CBI wanted to open the lockers in the presence of Kalmadi's family.
Soon after that, Kalmadi's Congress party followers and friends in the city began a series of moves to make the family feel comfortable in these testing times.
After the CBI team had left Kalmadi's residence, a silver car sporting the Commonwealth Youth Games logo that was parked opposite Kalmadi's residence came over to the main gate of Kalmadi House at 4.03 pm. Two men stepped out of the car and entered Kalmadi's house, returning with two women and a girl. Sources said the men were Kalmadi's people and the two women were maids, while the girl was Kalmadi's granddaughter. The maids and the granddaughter were whisked away to an unknown place.
An hour after the silver car had left, the CBI team visited the Erandwane branch of ICICI Bank near Kalmadi House.
The CBI had checked Kalmadi's bank lockers and personal accounts and sealed a total of six lockers in the city and Mumbai during a raid on December 24.
Yesterday, the CBI team reportedly visited branches of Canara Bank, HDFC Bank and Saraswat Sahakari Bank before entering the ICICI Bank at 5.12 pm.
The team was inside ICICI Bank till late in the evening.
Tiwari, who is chairperson of PMC School Board and a close friend of Kalmadi, also entered the bank with the CBI officials, said a source. Later, Chhajed and Pardeshi also arrived at the bank.
The CBI team reportedly went through and sealed Kalmadi's lockers in the bank.
Asked by mediapersons about the CBI searches, Meera said, "They opened the lockers to evaluate the family jewellery for which we have paid tax."
