Research student deported for his alleged involvement in anti-India activities

Woh kaun tha? PhD student Mostafa Safavi

Special branch officials are tight-lipped on this development. What information he accessed during his three-year stay in India has not been revealed. But sources within the Special Branch confirm that Safavi passed on some sensitive information outside the country.

The special branch is probing the process through which Safavi was allowed to do PhD (registration number CSCITPR185).

Only students possessing a research visa are allowed to pursue PhD, but Safavi was allowed to do his research even though he only had a provisional student visa.

To get a research visa a person has to first apply to the Home Ministry and after he gets a nod from the ministry of external affairs he is granted the same.

Sources said that he had managed to get a research visa with the help of an officer in the special branch. An inquiry has been ordered into this. But DCP Makrand Ranade denied such speculations. "I have not heard of such an inquiry."

Safavi, a student at Vaikunta Mehta Research Institute had submitted his paper in November last year. He was allowed to do PhD on a sensitive subject such as 'Managing Crime in e-world' in 2007.

MiD DAY contacted his guide Dr Yashwant Patil. He said, "We have given all the information related to Safavi to Police Commissioner's Office. I cannot comment or disclose any information about him."

Sources claimed that Safavi may have sent sensitive information outside the country. He had established a link with an officer in NDA and is suspected to have misused information.

When MiD DAY contacted NDA PRO Bagirath Dey, he said, "I have no knowledge on this matter."
DCP Makrand Ranade of special branch said, "Safavi's presence was undesired in the country so he was deported back to Iran."
