At a seminar on 'Emerging Technologies for Sub Conventional Conflict and Homeland Security' on Thursday, minister of state for defence MM Pallam Raju, said that the government plans to procure 70 per cent of its defence requirement from indigenous sources. The seminar was organised by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) and the Confederation of India Industries (CII).
He stressed upon the fact that while the country faces threats from abroad, internal security is also challenged by militant activities in 160 districts across the eastern and southern parts of the country.

Our communications strategies must encompass transmission of data, video and audio in real time. Adequate attention to range, encryption, and protection against counter attacks must be given," said the minister.
According to sources in Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Defence (MoD), the government has envisaged various components of internal security.
New centres for rapid response in case of any threat are being set up in important cities all over the country. Moreover, the centres for critical infrastructure and economic installations of the country will be given special attention and specialized units will be raised within the paramilitary forces to guard them.u00a0
"The new parameters for the paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies are being discussed. Apart from manpower enhancement, these agencies will get specialised equipment and gadgets to fulfill their pending demands," said an MHA officer, wishing anonymity.
"Like metros, threat of terrorism is looming large on second tier cities in almost all the states. We need to create more centers to respond to the Mumbai-like terror attacks," said the officer.
