There's a new musician on the block and she is all of 14. She is singer-producer Leslie Lewis' daughter. It's no coincidence that her middle name happens to be "Asha". She was given the name by singer Asha Bhosle herself, who also predicted that she would one day become a singer.

She will perform as a vocalist with music band Groove Junction whose members include Chris (lead guitar and vocals), Leo Mathews (bass), Jason Phillipe (keyboard) and Denzel Fernandes (drums).

"The kind of music we play is very different from other bands. It's a mix of Blues, Rock and R'n'B," says Chris.
Divya adds that since she came from a musical background, she was always keen on learning the ropes. Her grandfather, PL Raj, was a choreographer in Bollywood with hit movies like Don, Sholay, Sargam and Teesri Manzil to his name while her father is credited with establishing Hindi Pop in India and forming the international band Colonial Cousins.

"I was always around my dad since I can remember and I picked the nuances from him," she admits. Her influences range from her Dad to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, John Mayer and The Doors.

Divya and Groove Junction is expecting a young audience to turn up for the show and have chosen tracks and sounds that will appeal to the younger janata. Expect a mix of rock meets pop songs and the line-up will include songs by INXS, The Killers, Kings of Leon, John Mayer, Demi Lovato, Lissi, Fergie and Slash.

This concert will mark Groove Junction's second performance in the city. "I'm more confident now as I know what to expect. My first performance was a lot better than I expected. My friends and well-wishers had all come to watch me perform and came up to me," she reminisces.

But she knows that she has a long to way to go and is prepared to work hard. Divya is also thrilled that her school gave her free time to practice. In the future, she plans to record original albums and perform around the country. She is keen on pursuing music full-time as she already composes, plays the piano and the guitar.

On October 20, 8.30 pm onwards
At High Spirits, Koregaon Park.
