Gangsters shot in the Green Park encounter had given a slip to the cops last week

Satya Prakash and his gang had last week grazed past a death trap laid for them by a special team of the Delhi police. But luck changed sides on Monday.

On the trail of inter-state gangster Satya Prakash for the past few weeks, the cops were given a slip by him near Malviya Nagar last week.

Police sources confirmed that the police had specific input that the gang would strike at a bank in Malviya Nagar. A trap was laid for them but the gang changed the plan at the last moment and took another route to escape the clutches of the police.

"We were chasing them for the last few weeks. We had an idea about the car they were roaming in and also their plan to rob a bank in Malviya Nagar last week but at the last moment they changed their plans," they said.

However, on Monday, Satya Prakash and his three accomplices finally landed in the police net. The police got specific clues that the gang would meet near the South Extension-I McDonald's and proceed to rob a bank in Green Park.

Two members of the gang parked their bikes at the South Extension market and reached a nearby hotel where they met seven others who had reached the hotel in a black Honda Accord and Santro cars.

On their way to the bank, the police intercepted them near the Green Park Main Market. An encounter ensued in which four gangsters, including their chief Satya Prakash, Shakeel, Sonu alias Kuldeep and Nadeem, were shot. Three policemen also suffered minor injuries. The injured were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

"We knew that the gang would be heavily armed that is why all policemen were wearing bullet-proof jackets. Satya Prakash was hit in the leg while Shakeel got gunshot wounds on the upper part of the body," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) HGS Dhaliwal.

"They are desperate criminals and were planning to rob a bank in the Green Park area. They had also planned to rob a cash van," Dhaliwal added.

Two, out of five gangsters who escaped, surrendered in the office of a news channel in Noida. They have been identified as Harpal and Nadir.

Prized catch

Satya Prakash, a notorious criminal from Uttar Pradesh, was involved in the recent robberies at RK Puram, Malviya Nagar and Greater Kailash. The UP police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head. Among his accomplices, Sonu alias Kuldeep is a resident of South Extension. Shakeel is a resident of Mustafabad, east Delhi. The fourth accused Nadeem, is an Afghan and lived in Lajpat Nagar.
