Stores are offering huge rebates in May: they want to make up for poor sales in the festival season that ended with Ugadi
Shops selling clothes, furniture, mobile or footwear are ready to give away their wares at discounts as high as 70 per cent, and at a time when sales aren't the norm.
During the normal discount seasons typically before the budget and during Ugadi and Dassehra shops usually offer 20-40 per cent discounts. But business has been so dull in the last few months that shops are offering post-Ugadi discounts to draw customers. Ugadi usually comes in March.

Manohar, manager of Bargains, a garment shop on CMH Road, said, "We are moving out of this place because the business has come down by 80 per cent. It has become very difficult to manage."
"When there is no business, how can we survive by paying a huge rent and salaries to the employees?"
That is prompting him to clear his stuff at throwaway prices.
Riyaz,u00a0 cashier of Bargains said, "The business was pretty good in the initial days. But it is badly hit now. The other reason for poor business is the Metro project happening on CMH Road. The vehicles can't enter this road and there is no parking space. The road is dug up and it's full of dust. With all these, do you expect people come to shop here?"
Keeping up hope
An employee at Mega Mart said, "The sale has gone down since last month. We are giving a 50 per cent discount from today. Hope the sales will increase now. Normally we have 30 per cent on one and 40 per cent on two products. We provide 50 per cent discount to ouru00a0 member card holders."
Rakesh Singh, a shopper, said, "You find discount sale boards in garment, furniture, mobile, footwear and many more shops. It's a good time to buy for those who have money to spend. But not everyone has the money to buy at discount sales either," he added.
A furniture shop in Koramangala had put up a board offering 70 per cent off, and another big garment shop is giving a flat 45 per cent off, but they had few takers.
