Vasant Kunj residents complain that vehicles parked in service lanes block their movement

All is not well in joggers' park. Residents of south Delhi's posh Vasant Kunj area are finding it increasingly difficult to abide by the keep fit mantra.

The reason? Morning walk space cut short thanks to school buses and cars of vasant valley school. Residents allege that the chaos that ensues in the wee hours of the morning before school commences has left them without any space to carry on with their morning walk routine.

In a letter to the police commissioner, the residents of Vasant Kunj have complained that cars and buses coming to drop students block the entire approach road of DDA flats.

Anil Sood, a resident of the area and complainant wrote that the traffic police have facilitated parking of Vasant Valley School on the approach road, causing much problem. The cars and buses use the short stretch as racing track and obstruct parking space, due to it becomes impossible for residents to come out even if there is an emergency.

"For last one year, I have been pleading with authorities tou00a0 take some action but nothing has been done so far. My repeated requests to traffic commissioner to visit the spotu00a0 have got no response. The entire society has been facing numerous problems.

The buses and cars are parked throughout the day leaving little space for residents," Sood said. Surprisingly no action has been taken yet except that the matter has been referred to the Vigilance Cell of South District at Hauz Khas. In a letter dated January 3,u00a0 2011 to Shantanu Sen (OSD), Public Grievances, Delhi police conveyed the action plan for removal of encroachments on 15 locations but this excludes Mahipalpur, Mehrauli Road and all the roads where schools are located.

"This is really shocking. We had been writing for so long but our complaint was ignored. There has also been an increase in petty crimes in the area. Drivers of cars and buses keeps creating nuisance making it difficult for the women of the area to take this route," added Sood.

When MiD DAY tried to contact the school, the principal was not available for comment. However one of the school officials said, "We try to avoid any kind of inconvenience for the locals as they are important to us but rising number of cars for picks and drops is inevitable."

As part of action plan for removal of encroachments from the bus lanes, the Delhi Traffic Police had earlier identified 15 important travel corridors where emphasis was being laid on regulation of traffic with strict enforcement of rules and regulations.
