When MiD DAY called that police officer for clarifications on the incident, the officer stoutly denied it.

Finally, a relation of Diganth's said, "I don't know much about the late night incident but the family was discussing this issue early in the morning."

The relative who spoke did so on the condition of anonymity.

Then, a close friend of Diganth, Kiran Srinivas, said, "I met Diganth and he explained to me the incident that took place. He said he had been to a friend's birthday party when the police seized his friend's car for drink-driving. Then Diganth went to the police station and requested them to release the car. According to me, he behaves normally even when he drinks."

Chandarshekar Aijoor, a law researcher, says most celebrities misuse their name and fame to escape the law and sometimesu00a0 even the police give such people a wide berth.

"Our Constitution says (in Article 14) all are equal before the law and every one should respect it," Aijoor. "Still we see incidents of celebrities being more equal than the common man."u00a0
