National Capital will see maximum participation in the Raid de Himalaya car rally

The Dilliwallahs are all set for their ascent to the crown of India.

Raid de Himalayas, the highest altitude car rally in the country, will have the maximum number of participants from the national capital.







The 11th edition of the car rally will see participation by 187 adventure enthusiasts from 24 regions of the country and one from the United States. Like every year, the majority of participants are from north India but this year 51 participants are from Delhi alone.

The drivers will have to wade through snowfall, landslide and endure minus degree temperatures.

Raid de Himalaya known for the mix of adventure, thrill and fear would be the most difficult this time even for the experience drivers. Eighth-time participant Amardev Singh from New Delhi said, "Last week, I went for a recce of the track and the conditions have deteriorated due to rainfall and landslide in the recent past. It would be really tough as I am expecting snowfall during the rally. Leh to Kargil would be the most difficult terrain to mount."



The Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya rally will pass through some of the most inhospitable terrains in the Western Himalaya. On an average, the rally covers a distance of 300 kms a day. From Shimla to Leh, the rally will cover a distance of more than 2,000 kms, spread over 6 legs in 7 days.

The ceremonial flag-off of the rally will be in Shimla on Oct 6 and the first competitive leg will start from Shimla on Oct 7. After traversing through Manali, Patseo, Leh and Kargil, the rally will finally culminate in Leh on October 13.

This year the rally will cross the Khardung La (5604 mts) and Tanglang La (5360 mts) passes, the highest and the second highest motorable passes in the world, respectively.u00a0 The rally is not only the test of driving skills but it is also the about endurance. Manjeev Bhalla, vice-president Himalyan Motorsports said, "Rallyists will not only face the terror of inhospitable roads, they will also experience the most inhumanly weather on course. The temperature at the world's highest motorable pass Khardung La may even drop to as low as -15 degrees Celsius whereas the average will vary anywhere between 8 degrees Celsius to as low as 14 degrees Celsius."
