Congress for organisational restructure soon

With Lok Sabha elections around the corner, Congress has decided on an organisational restructure in a bid to retain power at the Centre for second time in a row.

A reshuffle of the AICC is expected anytime now with induction of at least two general secretaries and some secretaries, a party source said.

"The reshuffle could happen in a day or two to fill the vacancies arising out of the resignation of Margaret Alva and Ashok Gehlot, who assumed charge as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan," the source said.

An overhaul of some of the state units too is expected to bring in new and young leaders, who can bring in new realities and aspirations of voters, in place of those who have been at the helm for a long time.

The sources, however, ruled out a proposal to appoint four vice-presidents for each zone of the country, mooted sometime ago, saying that Congress President Sonia Gandhi is not favourably disposed to such an idea.

Apart from the reshuffle, a direction has been issued to all general secretaries and PCC chiefs to ensure that a preliminary list of probable candidates is finalised by the end of January so that candidates can be announced by February to give them sufficient time for poll preparations.
