Pandal catches fire; notice issued to the Mandal near Mandaiu00a0

Fire brigade officials are complaining about Ganapati mandals not adhering to their guidelines to prevent fire in the pandal.

What's more, the Pune Mahanagarpalika Mandal of the employees of Pune Municipal Corporation near the Mahatma Phule Mandai, was the first to suffer because of flouting of norms.

Their pandal caught fire last afternoon when the electric testing work was going on.

Subhash Tonde, president of the mandal said: "The halogen lamp located on the left-hand-side of the pandal was over-heated and the cloth caught fire.

This has happened for the first time in the last 70 years. Fortunately, we could control it and the fire brigade also came on time."

Electrician Nitin Jadhav said: "We removed the cloth near the halogen lamp immediately after it caught fire. Mandal volunteers doused the fire with buckets of water. We will take care henceforth."

The fire brigade had issued strict instructions to mandals to keep away cloths from halogen lamps and also warned the mandals that if they didn't comply with the rules, No Objection Certificates (NOC) would not be issued to them next year.

Warning issued
Chief Fire Officer Prashant Ranpise said: "We have issued a warning letter to the mandal. We have asked them to explain the cause of fire. If they are not taking any precautions, then we will not issue a NOC to their mandal next year.

"We will also ensure that the mandal removes encroachments near the pandal to avoid any accident during the ongoing festival," Ranpise said.
Following the incident, Ranpise has sent a letter to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manoj Patil, asking him to declare the Mahatma Phule mandai area as 'no vehicle zone' during the Ganesh festival.
Dagdusheth Ganapati, Mandi Ganapati and Babu Genu Mandal are the biggest and prestigious mandals in the area.
"We must avoid any risk of fire and in case of fire, the fire-fighters should get enough space to reach the pandals immediately," Ranpise added.
