Sixty year-old homemaker from Churchgate, Sarla Nagpal admits that the scent of seaweed is too pungent for her vegetarianu00a0 sensibilities, "though I do know a lot of vegetarians who love it. I get orders from strict Radhasaomi adherents too." Her take-away varieties include Asparagus, Mushroom, Tofu, Avocado, Carrot and marinated Cucumber Rolls at Rs 700 (for 24 pieces). She needs a day's notice, says the chef who also markets a home-made range of exotic salads, cookies and sugar-free sweets.

The shop that lies a stone's throw from the neighbourhood Jain temple sells home-made Sushi, available off-the-shelf in pre-packed boxes that hold 8 pieces each. The range here includes Cucumber, Avocado, Asparagus and Spinach rolls, all priced at Rs 175 a box. Each pack comes with a portion of Soya Sauce and young ginger shavings. The dish is a hot-seller, say proprietors Pravin and Jiten Chheda, and assure you it's 100% vegetarian.

From Bandra van to your door

It was London's Yo! Sushi that inducted 26 year-old Tarique Rangoonwala into the Sushi lovers' society. "I was a student at the London University, studying for an MBA in Finance at the time," Tarique says. That's when he and a friend decided to sample one of the dishes moving on a conveyor belt at a restaurant. "We were pleasantly surprised by the taste. There was so much flavour, that the fish just didn't taste raw." Back in Mumbai, he was disappointed to see that Sushi was available only at five-stars or select upmarket restaurants and priced at no less than Rs 800 a plate. Mumbai's first-of-its-kind Sushi delivery service was launched after he enrolled for a Japanese cuisine course in Europe, and hired a German chef to train his team.u00a0
"Our menu includes a variety of Maki and Hosomaki Rolls, Nigiri and Sashimi, and we use imported ingredients only," Tarique stresses, saying he is surprised to see eateries use local rice. "It costs about eight times as much, but we only use authentic Japanese Sushi rice, and take great pains to ensure that our vegetarian dishes are created with a separate set of tools." He smiles over how the Jain Sushi has invited the maximum queries (while seaweed has a distinct "sea" flavour that strict vegetarians dislike, their veggie dishes are free from it).
The servings are priced at Rs 150 onwards for 6 pieces, and aside from salmon, crispy chicken and tuna, he also stocks California Rolls (avocado and crab stick), Philadelphia Rolls (salmon and spring onion). We loved the Wasabi paste they use; not the sweet chutney that some restaurants serve as Wasabi. We recommend Spicy Salmon Premium Roll (Rs 250 for 9 pieces) and the Vegetarian Teriyaki Roll (Rs 200 for 9 pieces). But if you're not particularly fond of the seaweed flavour, opt for the Spicy Vegetarian Roll (Rs 200 for 9 pieces); the powerful spices mask the scent almost completely.

Strawberry-flavoured cashew
At first, you'd think they are sweets shaped like kaju. That's until the toothy-grinned waiter at this popular Maharashtrian snack joint tells you they are Strawberry Cashews. Don't let the hot pink shade put you off.
They are crunchy, and interesting. We think they make an innovative dessert option.
At: Ladoo Samrat, near Bharatmata Cinema, Lalbaug.
Cost: Rs 600 per kg
