In two separate incidents yesterday, businessmen lost Rs 2.32 lakh to online fraudsters

Posing as bank officials, hackers targeted two businessmen in separate incidents and defrauded them of a total of Rs 2.32 lakh.

In the first incident in Koramangala yesterday, the savings bank account of an industrialist was hacked and swiped 170 times by online fraudsters who withdrew Rs 2 lakh.

Ramakrishnan B, managing director, GMR Industries Limited, noticed that a fraudulent online transaction has been carried out from his account between May 22 and 24.

Hacked to pay bills

The hacker had used Ramakrishnan's account to pay his mobile phone bills online. The customer care service of the bank confirmed that Ramakrishnan's account has been hacked.

The Koramangala police told MiD DAY that they were tracking the hackers.

"We have sought the numbers of mobile phones whose bills were paid for from money that came from Ramakrishnan's account," explained a police officer from the Kormangala police.

Ramakrishnan refused to comment on the case.

What's phishing?

While in the other incident came to light when Naveen Kumar Midha, a resident of Lavelle Road, received an alert on his mobile phone intimating him of Rs 32,000 drawn from his account.

Midha had a few hours earlier shared his account details after receiving an email that asked him to do so.

Midha's bank confirmed that the money had been withdrawn from his account but informed him that the email he had received hours earlier had not been sent by the bank.

Midha had responded to a phishing overture. "How do I know that it is a phishing mail? It looked very genuine.

I had no reason to doubt it," Midha told the police. He was not available for comment when contacted by MiD DAY.

After filing a complaint with the bank, Midha also brought the incident to the notice of the Cubbon Park police.

"We have registered the case and are trying to locate the offender's Internet protocol address with the help of experts from the cyber crime cell," said a police officer from the Cubbon Park police station.
