No it's not the king of fruits this time. With mangoes largely unavailable in October, the horticulture department suggested the Organising Committee to treat sportspersons and delegates with Kinnaur apples.

"We have given our suggestion to the committee to serve Kinnaur apples to the visitors and have asked for the arrangement of a cold storage facility for the apples so that we don't face any kind of shortage," said an official on the condition of anonymity.

Kinnaur apples are grown in Himachal Pradesh and are renowned the world over. The surprising fact is that more than one lakh such apples are to be stored exclusively for the Commonwealth Games. Which means Delhiites will probably not be able to savour the delicious fruit in the coming months.

Meanwhile farmers are happy with the yield of the apples this year and accept that it has been encouraging compared to recent years. But they also stressed on the fact that the apples are rarely available to the common man.

"Generally these apples hardly reach the citizens of Delhi. In the current situation, it seems they will be left unsatisfied this year as well," said Virender Thakur, an apple grower from Himachal Pradesh.

"Last year, we managed to sell the apples at Rs 1100- 1200 per box. Each box contains 20 kg of apples," Thakur said.

But this year, bad weather conditions have hit the quality of the fruit.
"We expect the prices of apples to fall and there might be an acute shortage. But due to their demand in the Games, prices may shoot up again," Thakur added.
