WHAT happens when you are driving down the highways and the silhouette of the mountains in the distance looks like stock market graphs? If you happen to be an artist, it results in a series of art works. That is what happened with US-based artist Siri Khandavilli, whose recent works are up for display from today.
The exhibition, tiltled 'Money is my Honey', will have on display 24 paintings and three installations. "When I was driving down in Arizona with business news playing on the radio, I saw mountains which gave me the impression of stock market graphs, I thought there is some kind of connection between the ethereal and the materialistic. So I started thinking how I could bring it to my works," says Siri.
"Also, money was foremost on every mind especially last year during the recession. So the thought also generated from there," she adds.
Give me a dollar
One work of hers is a Lucky Laxmi Dollar Bill. It's an installation of a one dollar bill which has Siri's portrait as goddess Laxmi. There is a painting of butterflies which represent the fleeting nature of life. Another installation is the video of her performance art where she eats gold-coloured chocolate to show how the greed for money never ends. "My works deal with materialism, pop culture and consumption," says the artist who pits some of the important aspects of lifeu00a0-- for example food, sex and deathu00a0-- against money to show that money is transient.
Curated by Dr Alka Pandey, the show has works in mediums like acrylic and archival safe prints on canvas.
