Resident doctors of Lady Hardinge Medical College and Sucheta Kriplani Hospital call off work after a medico on duty gets beaten up

The resident doctors of Lady Hardinge Medical College and Sucheta Kriplani hospital went on an indefinite strike on Thursday after one of their colleagues was allegedly abused and beaten up by another employee of the hospital.

According to the doctors, one of the attendants of a patient, who incidentally happened to be an employee of the hospital, tried to force the doctor on duty to attend his patient first. When the doctor resisted, the attendant abused him and assaulted him.

"There is no security for doctors on duty. A similar incident had taken place a few months ago but administration didn't act. Now we will not call off the strike until they take some concrete action," said one of the resident doctors on condition of anonymity.

Over 300 resident doctors protested in front of the medical superintendent's office demanding stringent action against the Group D employee who had beaten the resident doctor. The incident had around occurred at 2 pm on Wednesday following which doctors had called off work for four hours.

The doctors had then asked the administration to ensure that security measures are in place and action was taken against the erring employee by Wednesday evening failing which they would go on strike. The doctors said as the administration had failed to meet their demands, they went on strike from Thursday.

"Why are hospital authorities not taking these matters seriously? We are here to treat patients and not to listen to their abusive language," said Dr Kishore of Lady Hardinge Medical College. "We want registration of an FIR in this regard and action against the employee who had beaten up the doctor on duty," he added.
