Officials of the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) have deported over 100 foreigners, who are staying in the city on the pretext of students. According to the officials, the students flout the rules and have even been known to get involved in illegal activities, including drug peddling and prostitution, to make ends meet while their paperwork is being processed. Foreigners arriving in the city on student visas fail to register with the FRRO department, since they are unable to furbish certificates from educational institutions where they wish to enroll. As per the rules, it is mandatory that every foreigner entering the country on either a student or visit visa, register with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival.

Recently, two Iranians illegally staying in Pune for four years and a Cameroon national with a fake passport were deported by the police. The Iranis, identified as Torkan Hussaini (22) and Mehershad Sadegi (25), were taken into custody from their Bavdhan residence. The cops also arrested real estate agents Pavan Sachdev and Nilesh Kokate of Bavdhan Khurd for helping the Iranians get rental accommodations. The agents were booked under Section 188 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The police said the two Iranians used to shift their residence after every six months to give police the slip. They said the duo used to organise night parties for foreigners in the city. The police said that though the two had arrived in the country on student visas,
they did not take admission in any educational organisation in the city and instead were found involved in the drug trade.
