The in-laws of the 25-year-old woman who was gang-raped on Thursday afternoon in Wakad are standing strongly behindu00a0 her. It was with the support of her in-laws and husband that she mustered the courage to lodge a complaint with the Hinjewadi police in the wee hours of Friday.
After almost 72 hours of the incident, the suspects -- Subhash Hiralal Bhosale, Ganesh Kamble and Ranjit Gade -- were arrested, and sent to police custody till April 8.
A member from the victim's family said, "Our only concern is that the culprits should not be let off easily. She is a victim and has done nothing wrong. We are going to support her in fighting the legal battle. We know there is a social stigma attached to it but we are mentally prepared to face all kind of questions. We only want justice."
The victim's husband, who works in the USA, returned to the city over the weekend.
The member added, "One of the culprits, Bhosale, is a history sheeter and has 11 offences registered against him, seven among them are cognisable. We were shocked that he got an externment order cancelled. We hope that this time stern action is taken against him so that he cannot commit a 13th crime."
Narrating the traumatic situation that the family had to face when the girl was kidnapped on Thursday night, he said, "Her mother called her around 7.30 pm but nothing was clear then. After she did not return home until 11 pm, we realised something was amiss. We approached the Hinjewadi police station but they did not realise the seriousness of the matter and asked us to return with her photographs and also refused to lodge a missing complaint."
He said that the complaint was lodged only when they got in touch with the higher officials. "When the abductors left her in Wakad and she returned home, we informed the police, who came to our residence to get her version," said the member.
The victim was using a high-end technology phone, which could have helped the police in tracing her. But the abductors had thrown away the SIM and battery of her phone so that nobody could contact her.
