Private vehicle owners had complained on social media after being fined by the BMC for not wearing masks inside their own cars. So, the civic body took cognisance and decided to not levy fines on people driving their private vehicles without masks.

However, those travelling in public transports such as, buses, taxis, rickshaws will have to wear masks or be ready to get penalised, reported Times of India.

Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Chahal gave the directions after complaints that the clean-up marshal has fined Rs. 200 per person for not wearing masks inside their own vehicles.

“The municipal commissioner has asked us to stop penalising any passenger in a private car who is not wearing a mask. However, this is strictly for the private cars only and we will continue to penalise the passengers who are travelling in public vehicles like rickshaw, bus, trucks and tempos. All our marshals must be informed of this change today itself and implemented immediately,” the directions from BMC chief’s office stated.
