On Sunday, a large number of people from around 600 societies from Malad and Kandivli conducted a joint meeting and took the signatures of 80 societies to start a campaign, as they have not been able to redevelop their societies since 2014 due to being located in a 500-yard radius of defence lands. They have requested the defence ministry and government to scrap the old gazette in this regard.

The residents told mid-day that after 2024, BMC stopped giving NOCs for redevelopment. Most existing societies are around 45 years old, and many have been demolished as they were in the C-1 (very dangerous, dilapidated) category, but all such building redevelopment has been stuck due to the 1967 defence gazette.
