Janmashtami: Two dead, 95 injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai

Two including a 14yearold boy was injured and 95 people were injured during Dahi Handicelebrations in Mumbai officials said adding that two of those injured were criticalA 14yearold boy associated with a Dahi Handi mandal tragically passed away on Saturday evening in Andheri East of Mumbai during Janmashtami 2025 celebrations officials saidThe BMC said that according to information received from Rajawadi Hospital Ghatkopar the boy Rohan Mohan Valvi was part of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak Andheri but had not participated in the Dahi Handi activity due to a history of jaundice He was seated in a tempo during the celebrations when he suddenly became unconsciousHe was first taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared brought dead at 9 pmThe incident occurred at Adarsh Nagar MarolMaroshi Road near Landmark Hotel Andheri East official saidThe local police are conducting a further investigation into the incidentAccording to the Mumbai civic body A 32yearold Govinda died during celebrations in Mankhurd area of the city while 14yearold boy associated with a Dahi Handi mandal tragically passed away on Saturday evening in Andheri East Mumbai an official said adding that there was report of at least 95 Govindas being injured across the city out of which two were criticalThe deceased was identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari 32 a member of the Bal Govinda Pathak He reportedly fell while tying the Dahi Handi rope at Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd He was immediately rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi where doctors declared him brought dead officials saidThe incident was reported by Shatabdi Hospital at around 3 pm they saidMeanwhile Multiple injuries have been reported in Mumbai as the celebrations of Janmashtami commenced in the city during heavy rainfall on SaturdayAccording to the information recorded by various government and BMC hospitals that till 10 pm on Saturday around 95 people playing Govinda were reported to be injured with 19 undergoing treatment and 2 in critical condition and 76 being dischargedOut of the total injured 51 injuries were reported at Central Mumbai hospitals with 32 still under treatment One Govinda Shreyas Chalke 23 is in critical condition at G T Hospital 31 injuries were reported from Eastern Suburbs hospitals where 5 are under treatment and 26 have been discharged and 34 injuries were reported from Western Suburbs hospitals with 3 under treatment including 9yearold Aryan Yadav who is in critical condition at BDBA Hospital KandivaliSo far 76 injured Govindas have been discharged and there have been no untoward incidents reported during the festivitiesMeanwhile in adjoining Thane district at least nine Govindas were reported to be injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in the districtMost of the injured Govindas were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa and the District Government Hospital in Thane The injuries were reported as noncritical officials saidAt Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital Kalwa five Govindas were treated Aditya Raghunath Verma 18 from Waghoba Nagar Kalwa with head injury Krishna Mithu Swayan 13 from Mumbra ndash right hand injury Samar Bansilal Rajbhar 10 from Kalwa ndash head injury Nishant Santosh Sawant 5 from Bhandup ndash left shoulder injurySaurabh Prakash Jadhav 26 from Bhandup ndash right shoulder injuryAccording to the civic officials at the District Government Hospital Thane four Govindas were treated Shivraj Pawar 10 from Wagle Estate ndash left hand injury Rohan Page 24 from Kopri ndash nose injury member of the Aai Chikhala Devi Govinda Pathak Kalpak Patil 35 from Kopri ndash back injury also a member of the same pathak and Karan Pawar 17 from Sevalal Nagar ndash minor scrapesMost of the injured Govindas are recovering well the official said adding that no lifethreatening injuries were reportedThe Dahi Handi festival celebrated with great enthusiasm across Mumbai and Thane often involves participants forming human pyramids to break a hanging pot handi symbolising a youthful feat of Lord Krishna
