Separatist guerrilla attacks struck ahead of the second phase of local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir to be held on Sunday, killing woman candidate Haseena Akhtar, 45, in Badgam district, police revealed.
The militants forced their way into Akhtar's house in Karpora village of Pakharpora area on Friday at midnight. "Militants asked Haseena to move out of her home and when she came out, they fired at her from close range, killing her on the spot," a police officer said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Saturday that the killing may not be linked to the polls. Militants here are known to use violence to intimidate the people and prevent participation in elections.
