It was a difficult decision for Zarine, as it had no precedent, but a month on, she can't stop smiling.

Her husband, Abdul Busheri, who suffered a paralytic stroke on June 14, is on the way to a near-miraculous recovery, primarily because she opted for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).
In fact, Abdul is the first stroke patient in the city to undergo this therapy and after 17 sittings at the Jaslok Hospital, the 58-year-old has managed a 50 per cent recovery and can even sit upright, smile and gives you a thumbs up when you inquire about his health. His speech is yet to be worked on.
Neurologists had expected Abdul to show signs of recovery only after six months of medication, but his wife wasn't as optimistic.
"His stroke was a death sentence and I feared he would be confined to bed for life, provided he survived," said Zarine (43).u00a0
The HBOT centre at Jaslok primarily treats patients with slow-healing wounds.
"We have relatives who were bedridden or put on ventilator for months.
Abdul couldn't even go to the toilet by himself, but now, eats and walks on his own," added Zarine, who is the sole breadwinner for her family that includes two teenage children.
Good results
The hospital also gives oxygen therapy to autistic patients. Dr Shoaib Padaria, department in charge, HBOT, said, "He was unconscious when admitted and was referred to the neurological department.
The family gave their consent for HBOT, and today they're thrilled with the results. We hope other patients will consider the therapy, as in a lot of cases, patients remain immobile for years."
What is HBOT?
Patients are placed in a chamber, which has an atmospheric pressure of 2 Bar, and pure oxygen is supplied to it.
In these specific conditions, the blood plasma absorbs six times more oxygen and improves capillary formation, speeds up healing and kills bacteria.
