While residents and commercial establishments have long been demanding that filthy nullahs in their surroundings be covered, the BMC seems to be taking its own time. The civic body had started the initiative in 2018, but managed to cover only 500 metres of nullahs in the city.

After much delay, they have resumed the task of covering two nullahs in Andheri East. The BMC will cover 48 metres of Krishnanagar nullah near Raunak society in Andheri East and the Abhishek nullah from the Juhu-Versova Link Road to N Datta Road in Andheri.

The semi-circular covers will have openings at a distance of every 10 metres to avoid hindrance in cleaning. There are around 260-km long major nullahs and 465-km long minor drains across the city. However, not all of them can be covered. Nullahs that require a machine to pull out garbage, those with dilapidated sidewalls and ones that are too wide near the creek need to be left uncovered.

The pilot project to cover the nullahs was first announced in 2017-18. The idea was to prevent people from dumping garbage in nullahs. In 2018, the civic body covered 110 metres of nullahs in Kandivli. In March 2019, the BMC added covers on 390-metre stretch in Dahisar — V H Desai nullah near Vasant Villa society, Yadav Nagar nullah at Parag Nagar, Sambhaji Nagar nullah at Shiv Tekadi, Cosmos nullah near Cosmos school, and the nullah in the BMC garden near Borges road.
