More trouble for Buta's son

Interrogation of the hawala operator Dukh Singh Chauhan, who was arrested with Buta Singh's son Sarabjot Singh alias Sweety, has opened a can of worms.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths have unearthed Chauhan's tainted records, which revealed that this is not the first time he has come under the scanner.

"We are questioning him to find out how many transactions he has carried out at Sweety's behest," the officer said.

Added CBI Joint Director Rishi Raj Singh, "We will ensure that Chauhan's confessional statement is watertight. His revelations could put Sarabjot in a difficult spot."

Chauhan is a key member of the hawala racket. "Chauhan was arrested under the provisions of Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Acts (COFEPOSA) in 1994-95," said an ED official.

Records indicate that Chauhan has been associated with the hawala syndicate in Dubai for many years and could be transferring money for ministers.

ED officials are probing his involvement with Pune-based stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan Chauhan's advocate, Manjula Raut, said, "It is yet to be proved how the 1995 case, if it is even on record, is connected to the present case."
