MBA graduate arrested in Rs 3-cr job racket

Two persons, including an MBA graduate, who duped about 85 city students of Rs three crore on the pretext of training them in their maritime institute and providing jobs on foreign ships or cruises, have been arrested, police said today.

Two persons, including an MBA graduate, who duped about 85 city students of Rs three crore on the pretext of training them in their maritime institute and providing jobs on foreign ships or cruises, have been arrested, police said today.


The accused, identified as Manoj Dube and Sanjay Mishra, were arrested recently, while their associates Vijay Dubey, Manish Dubey and Ajit Mantri are still absconding.


The accused had cheated the students claiming that Sea Rock maritime institute offers Merchant Navy courses and promised jobs on foreign ships, police said.


They also claimed that the institute was affiliated to International Maritime Academy (IMA) in Chennai and approved by the ministy of shipping. Students with minimum qualification 12th standard were elible to enroll themselves in the institute, they said.

In July 2008, a 19-year-old boy had approached police complaining that he had paid Rs 60,000 to Sea Rock institute in suburban Andheri for the shipping course.

"Initially they taught the complainant foreign languages including French and Russian for two months and they again asked him to pay Rs four lakh for further training," Sanjay Saxena, Additional Police Commissioner (EOW), said.

"The complainant was made to run from pillar to post in the institute. The boy later realised that the institute had cheated several others in the similar manner after which he lodged police complaint," Saxena added.

The probe has revealed that Manoj had duped about 85 students and from each of them, the institute had taken a fee anything between Rs two to four lakh. "Manoj and his associates fled from the scene after they got information about the police complaint.

They cheated students to the tune of about Rs three crores," Saxena added. Based on the tip off, police laid a trap and arrested Manoj and his associate Mishra from western suburbs recently, Saxena said. Manoj had done MBA from Dubai and his father is a doctor in suburban Jogeshwari, Saxena said adding futher investigation is on.
