Yesterday, however, Nargis was jubilant after casting her vote with her 15 fellow inmates of The Lotus Home, Worli, for the Assembly polls.

None of the 16 inmates of The Lotus Home, a centre for educated women senior citizens run by the Maharashtra State Women Council, could vote in April, because the electoral authorities did not consider it their permanent residential address.

"I was deprived of my constitutional right to vote during the Lok Sabha elections. But today I feel proud of being a good citizen by casting my vote," said Nargis, who works as a secretary for a reputed cardiologist in Peddar Road.

Malini Zaveri, a former All India Radio artiste and a law graduate who had once practised with Ram Jethmalani, too is happy about voting.

She came to The Lotus Home three years ago. "For various reasons, I could not cast my vote after 35 years. I am eagerly waiting for my daughter to return from Bangkok, so that I can show her the ink mark on my finger."

Desire to vote

MiD DAY had written about the inmates' inability of vote in the Lok Sabha polls on May 1.

That time, Nirmalaben Patel (80), a distant relative of Sardar Patel, had told this correspondent about her desire to vote. She, however, passed away in August due to cancer.

The senior citizens thanked MiD DAY, Delipa Fernandes, president, Maharashtra State Women Council, and their superintendent, Maya, for making sure they got to vote.

Fernandes said, "This was a collective effort and even the state election administration extended full co-operation in ensuring that the senior citizens got their voting card."
