Samshuddin Malik (36) was arrested by the Shivaji Park police station on Tuesday afternoon from his residence for duping 24-year-old Savitri (Name changed to protect the identitity) of Rs three lakhs.
Savitri was depressed as she was not getting good praposal for marriage. She then came in contact of Malik who assuerd her of a suitable groom and demanded Rs 3 lakh to perform rituals to bring good luck.
Initially, Malik told her to perform a pooja and sacrifice a hen or a goat. Later, he upgraded the sacrifice to a buffalo sacrifice and finally to a rhino.
The promise was that within 20 days of the ritual, she would start getting marriage proposals.
However, there was no progress in her life even after paying him the sum of Rs 3 lakhs. Savitri then went to visit him at his house in Dadar. She was shocked to find out that Malik had left the house.
The neighbours informed her that he was staying there on rent. Realising that she had been duped, she lodged a complaint with shivaji Park Polce station.
A manhunt was launched and Malik was nabbed from Mira Road. "He had taken the Dadar house on rent and fled the place after taking the money," said N V Gurav, senior inspector from Shivaji Park police station.
An officer investigating the case told MiD DAY, "As he was arrested yesterday, they had no time to interogate him. Preliminary investigation revealed that he had cheated a lot of people. He also has one office in Andheri near Navrag theater. I hope that after reading the name in the newspaper people come forward to complain."
Malik was to be produced before the Bhoiwada Megistrate court on Wednesday.
