LESS than a week after a mishap at a monorail construction site in Chembur, another labourer died in an accident at an MMRDA project site in Andheri (West).

The incident took place at the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro construction siteu00a0 yesterday when a labourer fell to his death. A police official from D N Nagar police station said, "The deceased Banvariral

Saritaram (21) was working on the viaduct when he accidentally slipped and fell 18 meters. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead."

A case under section 304 (A) of the IPC (causing death by negligence) has been registered against the contractor Dhanukumar Ram (28).

A statement issued to the media by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), which is constructing the VAG corridor, stated that the construction was being carried out under strict safety conditions.

"The mishap took place due to negligence on the part of the worker who failed to hook his safety line at the time of the fall.

The worker was provided with complete safety gear i.e. safety helmet, boots, jacket, double safety lanyard," said Dilip Kawatkar, joint project director, MMRDA.

The statement also stated that it was very unfortunate that such an incident had occurred inspite of the strict safety measures, third-party safety audit being carried out from time to time and safety training being imparted to workers at the site.

"Suitable compensation and all possible help would be given to the family of the worker," said an MMOPL spokesperson.

"We have booked the contractor for causing death due to negligence and further investigations are on," said VD Bhoite, senior inspector, DN Nagar Police Station.
