'Waiting for Indian govt to give us justice'

MiD DAY spoke to several witnesses and family members of those martyred in the 26/11 carnage to gauge if Osama bin Laden's death had inspired hope for justice in their hearts....

Daughter of slain ASI Tukaram Ombale

"US government today has given justice to their nationals by blowing to bits the brain behind the 9/11 attacks. We should also get justice for the 26/11 terror strike. Qasab is just a front man; the brains that trained him are at large in Pakistan. I feel that the Indian government should act stringently to nail them."

Manisha Chitte
Widow of Police Constable Arun Chitte

"Osama was killed.u00a0 But what about the man who killed my husband? Every time Qasab's photograph is shown on television, my three daughters point at him and say, 'He killed our father.' I have no answer to give them. How long will it take the government to hang Qasab? Or will he keep haunting my daughters as long as they live?"

O Pu00a0Puri
Former Director of Central Bank of India, who was at Trident and sustained injuries in the terror strike

"Indian government should rise to the occasion. It is shameful that a person like Qasab, was provided with legal assistance with which to defend himself in the Indian courts. We made a mockery of ourselves. Instead, he should have been hanged publicly, sending a strong message to our neighbouring countries that support terrorism."

Sunder Thadani
Peddar Road resident who was at Taj during the attack

I am happy that the US forces killed Osama. I would have been pleased had the Indian government managed to take similar action against those terrorists who were involved in the 26/11 carnage. We are heading towards the third anniversary of the carnage, and no glimmer of hope for justice ca be seen."

Dru00a0Mu00a0M Begani
Surgeon at Bombay Hospital who had performed 28 surgeries in 24 hours on 26/11

"The Indian government should definitely take a tough stand to handle the people who are perpetrating these inhuman acts on our soil. Action speaks louder than words."u00a0

Shivkumar Bharadwaj
Who was at Taj Hotel on 26/11

"I was at the Taj and experienced the sheer horror that ill-fated night. I came very close to death, and saw people being shot. The fanatics are not after individuals, but want to hamper the growth of our country. Pakistan should understand that the fundamentalists are a direct threat to their nation's prosperity and growth as well. An eye for an eye won't take us anywhere. It will only divert our attention and deplete our resources."u00a0

Smita Salaskar
Widow of slain policeman Vijay Salaskar

"After 10 years justice has been done, because the US government was determined to find Osama. We need strong reactions from the Indian government. Instead, they participate in peace talks with those who are shielding terrorists. Why did I have to lose my husband and experience such grief? No amount of monetary aid can fill the vacuum ever. Why is Qasab not being punished?"

Vinita Kamte
Widow of Additional Commissioner of Police, Ashok Kamte, who was shot at Cama Hospital by Ajmal Qasab

"I feel a lot, but do not want to say anything."

Madhavi More
Widow of Police Sub Inspector Prakash More

Other countries like USA and Israel react faster when it comes to giving justice to their citizens. Here we lacku00a0u00a0 political will when it comes to sending a strong message to those extremists who dare enter our country and kill innocent people. We must first relinquish the chalta hai attitude, and instead, develop more determination. To start with, Qasab must be hanged to death."
