Bandra Worli Sea Link: Chopped body found in gunny bag

Half the body of an unidentified woman was found about 100 metres away from the Bandra-Worli sea link on Sunday night. The Bandra police have registered a case of murder after they found the body part from waist down to her knees.

The Bandra police said they received a call at around 10.30 pm from pavement dwellers near the Reclamation flyover about a body wrapped in a gunny bag dumped amid the debris by the sea shore.

“I was passing by the garbage heap when I felt a strong stench of decaying flesh. I looked around and found the gunny bag. I alerted residents who discovered part of a decomposing body inside,” said Mohammed Ismail, a rag picker who found the body.

The police reached the spot and after examining the remains, sent it for post-mortem at Cooper Hospital. “The woman whose body part was found would have been between 25 to 35-years-old and from a well-to-do family going by the texture of the blue cloth found on her,” said Vishwas Nangre-Patil, additional commissioner of police (western region).

Officers said that according to the initial autopsy report, the woman’s body had been cut with a sharp chopper or weapon.

The remains bore several cut marks and stitches on her private parts indicating that she had either had an abortion or delivered a baby. “We have sent the remains for forensic examination to extract DNA samples of the victim,” said Nangre-Patil.

Police officers investigating the case said that going by the state of decomposition of the body, they suspect that the woman must have been murdered about two days ago. “It is possible that the woman’s body was cut up into pieces and the other parts were also dumped by the killer in similar gunny bags.”

Police have also not ruled out the possibility of the bag having been washed ashore, “We are presently checking all missing persons’ complaints filed in the city especially from the Vasai-Virar area. We are tracing the identity of the woman to begin the investigation,” said an officer. u00a0
