Monopoly’s origins date back to an American, Elizabeth Magie Phillips, in 1903 who called it “The Landlord’s Game.” Ironically, Phillips was trying to show people how bad it was when a few wealthy individuals controlled all the land. Over time, it gained widespread popularity when Charles Darrow, sold the rights of his homemade version to the Parker Brothers in 1935.
