Most people find it necessary to embark on a religious pilgrimage at some point in their lifetime. Often, places of worship can double up as some of the most picturesque locales on earth. Follow our tips for a good pilgrimage and have a holy holiday.
Appropriate clothing: Always check about the rules of the religious site that you are visiting. It's best to dress modestly. Many places require you to cover your heads; women need to wear something that goes below their knees, some temple sites in South India require men to not wear shirts at all!
Timings: Timings vary for places of worship depending on the time of the rituals. Confirm before you visit. You don't want to travel 100 km only to be told that it's god's time to rest so. Also, certain important rituals are performed only at particular times or seasons (once in twelve years, in some cases), so read up before and decide what interests you the most.
Footwear: Avoid wearing expensive footwear. There are chances these might get stolen or even lost amongst other pairs.
Rules: Many places do not allow people from other religions to enter the place of worship while some prohibit photography. Hence read about the place and plan a visit accordingly. Also be aware of other customs followed at the place, so you don't offend anyone, unknowingly.
Exercise: Visits to many religious places involves long walks or even hikes. Get into shape before beforehand so you don't miss on all the action.
Make a timetable: Places of worship are often crowded. Always keep a buffer time and make some space for delays due to long lines in your travel plans.
