A quarter of men believe owning a pet shows the opposite sex they understand the meaning of responsibility and commitment.

The research, carried out by the makers of new video game The Sims 3 Pets, revealed a staggering 81 per cent of men think dogs are the best route to asking a woman out.

The research also revealed that seventy per cent of single women think petting an adorable dog is a good way to start talking to an attractive stranger, with 52 per cent admitting they find it less embarrassing than approaching the owner directly.

It found that women are most attracted to men who own golden retrievers, followed by those with border collies and labradoodles.

Other breeds women find attractive were, in order of popularity, beagles, English springer spaniels, jack russells, chow chows and dalmatians.
