Lilo's in Lokhandwala is a value-for-money option for takeaways; it scores high with the Mutton Cheese Benjo and Aloo Mutter Paratha
Lilo's is a minuscule takeaway eatery that specialises in the Benjo. Savouring this original dish, inspired from the authentic cuisine of Indore, and modified for Mumbai's taste buds, is worth your time and taste. Incidentally, the eatery is named Lilo's, after the owner's pet name.
Mutton Cheese Benjo
The Mutton Cheese Benjo (Rs 50) is a tasty preparation of egg and mutton, wrapped inside a golden-brown fried omelette and stuffed into a crisp buttery bun. The result is a melt-in-your-mouth tasty offering that is devoid of oil, and spice. But this might not please foodies who like to play it safe. While it's a healthy, wholesome treat, it tastes a bit bland. The flavour of the mutton that should provide the predominant layer of tang is restrained. And while this might not exactly be a bad thing, it is definitely, an acquired taste.
The Aloo Mutter Paratha (Rs 80) is a filling alternative. What's nice about Lilo's is that they do not skimp on the fillings and the portions. Each item can be a meal-for-one. The Aloo Mutter Paratha is served with yummy chole and chutney. It is delicious and fresh, and is greased with a knob of butter. The pick of the lot.
The Spicy Chicken Roll (Rs 70) was made with pure wheat flour and the owner took great pride in telling us that they only use the best and most edible ingredients. Every item is not shallow-fried in oil unlike most Bengali / Hyderabadi stalls in Mumbai. Lilo's uses the slow fire roast on a huge tawa that is a delightfully healthy choice. The Spicy Chicken Roll has the right kind of crispness on the outside and tender on the inside. It doesn't overdo the onions like its competitor, Hanglas.
There are a few comic books placed on a stand outside, if you wish to sit in its tiny seating area. It' a nice touch, but one doubts if this is that sort of place where customers will prefer to eat at. It's an order in or take-away joint, strictly. Lack of parking space won't turn it into a heaven for parked cars, filled with hungry folk, a la Hanglas. But if you are looking for an economical and healthy taste of Bengal and need a break from the oily overindulgence at Hanglas, drop by Lilo's.
