Spiced just right

Sprung up in a far flung area of Undri, The Spices may well prove to be a boon for neighbourhood residents, owing to its good quality Indian food and polite service

On the day we visited, there were a couple of families, with kids in tow, enjoying their Sunday lunch, with daddies sipping their glasses of whisky and mummies munching away at masala papads. We liked the feel.u00a0u00a0

The menu largely comprised Indian options with a sprinkling of Chinese and a few Continental options that included one sizzler, one pasta and one bake. Of course, it didn't make sense to venture there. But, duty beckoned us to try the Chinese before we jumped into Indian. So, we tried a Mushroom Manchurian (Rs 145). It tasted just the way Mushroom Manchurians would have tasted at most places in India.

Soon, it was time for the actual food of spices. We opted for a Veg Chilli Milly (Rs 160) that interestingly came with wedges of crisp papad sticking out of the mixed vegetarian, medium-spiced gravy.

Next, we opted for the Prawns Malwani (Rs 280) and Jeera Rice (Rs 75). This was, by far, the highlight of our meal. The prawns were juicy and the curry a perfect blend of coconut and coastal spices. So delicious was it, that we simply couldn't stop ourselves from over-eating. We even ordered a Fresh Lime Soda (Rs 35) and a Chaas (Rs 30) to help us polish the dish.

With polite staff and good quality Indian fare and hopefully better standards of hygiene, The Spices can do really well given the fact that there are barely any sit-down, family-friendly places in this stark, developing area.u00a0u00a0u00a0
