The lovelorn hero drowning his sorrows in a glass of soda and whisky is part of Bollywood lore, right from KL Saigal's interpretation of Devdas to Amitabh Bachchan's Sharabi. Fast forward to Gen Next, who has no time to mourn over lost love, and where 'booze' is just another way to keep flagging spirits high. With alcohol prices sky rocketing, though, looking for an alternative may not be a bad idea. Fizzie Soda, in Malad, is one such alternative.

Teenagers comprise a large part of the clientele at this hole-in-the-wall joint located on Sunder Lane in Orlem. Apart from regular flavoured sodas, including orange and lemon, the menu lists some unique ones under the Rock Bottom section. Appearances are deceptive when it comes to Fizzie Soda's menu as what you see is not what you get. None of the nine flavours mentioned in this section have any alcohol. The sodas are flavoured to give you a taste of your chosen poison minus the hangover.
You can choose from Coffee Beer, Rum Cola, Vodka, Whisky, Chocolate Whisky, Chilly Vodka, Golden Rum, Peach Beer and Red Tequila (or Red Taquilla, as spelt on the menu). The flavoured sodas are served chilled in a transparent plastic cup.
We recommend the Chocolate Whisky, which has a sweet alcoholic aftertaste that goes well with the extra fizz, and lingers long after you have finished the drink. The Rum Cola was strictly okay as we could taste more cola with just a hint of rum. The Peach Beer on the other hand is a spin on Iced Tea butu00a0u00a0-- and pardon the punu00a0-- is still worth a shot!
