Celebrate World Environment Day by attending an eco-friendly exhibition and a gig

Eco-friendly initiative The Beauty of Recycling 2011u00a0-- Freedom from Plastic will ring in the World Environment Day (June 5) this year. Organised by eCoexist (a city-based NGO) this exhibition-cum-sale will feature environment -friendly recycled products such as mobile holders, clutch purses, folders, shopping cases, shopping bags, wallets, pouches, slippers, shoulder bags and decorative items. Various environmental groups such as Rotary Club of Pune, Harita NTI of Chennai, Thunk of Banglore, Tamasha of Ahmedabad and Varnajalam of Chennnai will also showcase and sell their products. "If the usage of plastic bags is avoided and eco-friendly goods are used instead, then many issues related to the environment will be solved. We are expecting huge participation from the citizens and on World Environment Day they should pledge not to use plastic bags," she added.

There will also be a musical event by Taal Inc, a Junk Percussion Band where the band members will make music from junk such as old paint cans, aluminum cans, old tyres, throwaway 20 litre mineral water cans, steel pipes, wood blocks and old iron chairs. "This will be our debut event and we will be using scrap junk to create music.

We will play some popular numbers, folk songs and African numbers. There will be interactive exercises with the crowd as well," said musician Varun Venkit. The band believes in the universality of rhythm and are on a mission to "uncover every sound lying beneath every object and bring it to percussive life". The ensemble consists of Varun Venkit, Agneya Chikte, Abhijit Jejurikar, Amar Kulkarni, Dhir Mody and Nitin Jayaraman.

On: June 4 and 5, 11 am to 7 pm
At: Fab India outlets, opposite Jehangir Hospital and Aundh.
The Junk Percussion Ensemble Taal Inc will perform at 6.30 pm on June 4.
