He died on February 7, 2026, at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu, after his health suddenly worsened. Doctors suspect cardiac arrest as the likely cause of death, though an official medical report is still awaited.
Born in Dang, Nepal, Thapa built an extraordinary career spanning more than four decades and became one of the most recognisable figures in Nepali cinema. He first stepped into the film world with the Hindi movie Ek Duuje Ke Liye in 1981 and went on to appear in several Bollywood projects during the early phase of his career. However, it was his work in Nepali films that cemented his legacy and made him a household name.
