Will support 90-year-old woman who has been denied her pension

Amitabh Bachchan was so moved by the plight of Gayatri Devi, a 90-year-old freedom fighter who has been refused her pension, that he decided to take care of her for the next five years.

The actor made the declaration at the IBN18 Network's Citizen Journalist Awards. "I am moved by their plight. Particularly that of the 90-year-old lady and have announced that I shall take care of her pension for the next five years. She blesses me," he explained on his blog. "She has only that element of humanity left in her. She can barely walk. And she is old. And all she wants is her due u2013 her pension u2013 Rs 3,500 per month from the government."

Gayatri Devi had been receiving pension from the Bihar government since 1997, but it was suddenly stopped in 2002. She was told her name appeared on a list of fake freedom fighters, even though she has documents to support her claim. After a long fight and dharnas on New Delhi's streets, the Delhi government intervened and moved her to an old age home and granted her a destitute pension. But she plans to continue her battle till the Bihar government agrees to give her pension.
