Simply Sport Foundation (SSF) and Capri Sports, in partnership with UP Warriorz, unveiled the ‘Play Without Pause’ Report on the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day. This is a first-of-its-kind menstrual health literacy program measuring the impact of menstrual health literacy among 1,205 participants (1145 athletes and 56 coaches) across Uttar Pradesh.

Over six months, SSF, under Capri’s sports development fund, conducted 26 menstrual health workshops, reaching 1,145 athletes and 56 coaches across 12 districts, including Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Bhadohi, Kushinagar, Deoria, Aligarh, Agra, Ghaziabad, and Noida. Additionally, the intervention also included the distribution of 50,000 pads and the installation of 6 pad vending machines in Lucknow and Ayodhya centres for athletes. The program is unique in its use of rigorous data tools-pre/post surveys, focus groups, period tracking diaries, and coach interviews-to capture measurable behavioural change around menstruation and sports performance.
The initiative led to a 42% reduction in missed training days due to menstruation, from 40% at baseline to 23% at endline. Athletes showed a marked improvement in menstrual health knowledge, with 78.8% demonstrating significant post-workshop learning gains. Tools like the Meri Khel Yatra diary helped athletes connect their cycles to nutrition, training load, and emotional well-being. Through a mix of hands-on workshops, athlete-friendly tracking tools, and one-on-one engagements, the program successfully empowered girls aged 10–22 to manage their cycles, fuel better, and stay active throughout their periods.
Ankit Nagori, Founder, Simply Sport, said, “Menstrual health is an invisible barrier in Indian sports. Through this initiative, we wanted to make it visible, understandable, and manageable. Every session, diary entry, and conversation was designed to place the athlete at the centre of her journey, not on the sidelines because of stigma or pain.”
One of the standout aspects of the program was its inclusion of male coaches, traditionally left out of menstrual health conversations. Through structured seminars and personal interviews, many male coaches reported adopting new approaches, like sign-language systems for discreet communication, adjusting training loads during menstruation, and encouraging open dialogue with female athletes.
Jinisha Sharma, Director, Capri Sports, said, “Our collaboration with Simply Sport has helped improve menstrual health awareness - a key factor in performance & wellbeing for women athletes. Through our thorough data monitoring exercise, we learned that the workshops successfully addressed critical gaps in nutrition and familiarity, including iron’s role in women’s health. Capri Sport is focused on holistic athlete-oriented systems and will continue supporting foundational work that empowers sportswomen to take better control.”
The Simply Periods Initiative is a replicable model for inclusive athlete care, reaffirming Simply Sport Foundation’s commitment to bridging critical gaps in infrastructure, policy, and welfare, particularly for young girls navigating puberty while striving for peak performance. The report also exposes systemic gaps-limited access to sanitary products and disposal infrastructure at training centres, persisting cultural stigma, and a lack of medical and nutritional expertise for adolescent athletes, underscoring the urgent need for a nationwide, gender-responsive approach to athlete support systems.
