Lucky Gupta Solves India’s Taxi Driver Crisis

Lucky Gupta

Every time we hop into a cab, we would normally consider convenience, punctuality, and protection. But what about the good of the guy driving? How often do we take the time to think of his well-being?

India's taxi business, with all its technological development, has a gritty truth to it. There are more than 2 million taxi drivers in India today, working for players such as Ola, Uber, and traditional services. The drivers are the lifeblood of city transport, but most are barely getting by.

The Hidden Struggle

On average, a taxi driver earns approximately ₹16,700 per month - that is roughly ₹550 per day (Indeed India). Much of that ends up going towards platform commissions - even as much as 25% - plus fuel charges (₹500–₹700 per day) and border tolls when they move between cities. What is left might not even be sufficient to meet the cost of living, leave alone maintain a family or settle the car loans they borrowed hoping for a better tomorrow.

One driver recently posted, "Subah se shaam tak gaadi chalata hoon, fir bhi ghar jaake sochta hoon ki EMI kaise bharu." ("I drive all day, and still go home wondering how to pay my loan.")

Safety Without Support

It becomes even more challenging when we understand that most drivers do not have personal accident insurance. Commercial vehicle insurance is a must, but it only covers third-party risks. When a driver is injured, they are usually left with no financial protection. With India having over 4.6 lakh road accidents in 2022, resulting in over 1.6 lakh deaths (SaveLIFE Foundation), the lack of cover is perilously unsafe.

Commuters Are Also Affected

While drivers struggle with these issues, commuters aren't immune to them either. Surge pricing, ride cancellations, and dynamic fares have eroded trust in traditional cab services. A typical rider pays ₹150 to ₹300 per ride, only to face delayed pickups, unclean vehicles, or drivers who are understandably irked by the bad conditions they are subjected to.
