Parkinson's

A Dubai resident, who has been living with advanced Parkinson's disease for 13 years, has achieved a significant milestone in his health journey. For the first time in over a decade, he was able to fast during Ramadan, a remarkable feat made possible by the groundbreaking levodopa subcutaneous pump. Previously, he relied on taking 10 to 15 tablets daily to manage his symptoms. Now, thanks to this innovative treatment, he has regained the ability to engage in fasting for Ramadan, which had once seemed impossible due to the limitations of his condition.

The transformative change took place after the patient received treatment at the Parkinson’s Centre of Excellence at King’s College Hospital Dubai. The hospital is one of the first in the region to offer the Foslevodopa pump, a next-generation treatment for advanced Parkinson's disease. This innovative device delivers levodopa, the gold standard in Parkinson's treatment, continuously through the skin, much like an insulin pump used for diabetes. The precise dosage is personalized to meet each patient’s unique needs, with adjustments made by experienced Parkinson’s specialists such as Dr. Vinod Metta and Prof. Ray Chaudhuri.

King’s College Hospital Dubai is at the forefront of Parkinson’s care in the UAE, providing advanced and personalized treatment options that significantly enhance patients' independence. The introduction of this pump is transforming Parkinson’s care in the region and allowing patients to regain control over their daily lives, including undertaking activities like fasting, which many thought impossible for individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Vinod Metta, a consultant interventional neurologist and Parkinson's specialist at King's College Hospital Dubai, praised the success of the treatment.

“Personalizing patient care and customizing dosage requirements is essential, as no two patients are the same. Optimization must be tailored according to the severity of the disease and the total dopamine needed. With these device-assisted therapies, patients gain increased control over their condition. Witnessing our patient regain the ability to fast for Ramadan after 13 years is a powerful testament to the effectiveness of this new levodopa treatment and the profound impact it can have on individuals' lives.”

King’s College Hospital Dubai’s Parkinson’s Centre of Excellence is the region's first dedicated multidisciplinary center for Parkinson’s care, offering world-class treatment options to patients with movement disorders. The center provides advanced diagnostic tools, personalized treatment plans, and innovative therapies aimed at improving the quality of life for Parkinson’s patients at every stage of their journey. This approach ensures that patients receive state-of-the-art care tailored to their unique needs.

The Foslevodopa pump is another significant milestone in the center’s commitment to providing cutting-edge neurological treatments in the UAE. It is helping patients regain control and independence in their lives, which was once thought unattainable.

The patient, deeply grateful for the life-changing treatment, expressed, “Fasting for Ramadan has been my highest will. The experience is truly a blessing.”
