Play resumed on the third day between India and Sri Lanka after a wet outfield had delayed start in the morning.
The second day was washed out on Monday without a ball being bowled, while 22 overs were lost on the first due to heavy rain in this southern coastal town.
Overcast skies greeted the players on the third morning, making it difficult for the groundstaff to dry the drenched outfield at the Galle International Stadium.
In the 68 overs of play so far, Sri Lanka made 256-2 on the opening day with Tharanga Paranavitana on 110 and Mahela Jayawardene on eight.
Rain had been forecast on all five days of the match, which marks the final Test appearance for Sri Lanka's world bowling record holder Muttiah Muralitharan.
