FORMER Pakistan pace stalwart Wasim Akram let out one of his secrets which helped him become the best swing bowler in international cricket in the 1990s: "It was by bowling in Sharjah that I learned how to bowl on slow tracks," said Akram, who was chief guest at the 10th edition of the Shyam Bhatia annual awards organised by the Dubai Cricket Council.
Bhatia, an Indian based in Dubai, is a do-gooder for gulf cricket. The function held last Wednesday was attended by International Cricket Council president David Morgan, CEO Haroon Lorgat and Sunil Gavaskar along with former ICC chief Ehsan Mani.
Asked by about his mission, Bhatia told Gulf News: "My mission is to spread the game and make it affordable for everyone to play it. Cricket is a game that can teach you a lot about life and I want everyone to enjoy it."
Amjad Javed of Fly Emirates who claimed the best all-rounder award in the Division 'A' tournament, said the award came at the right time with UAE selectors on the verge of picking the UAE team for the World Cup qualifiers.
Rameez Shahzad (Nucaf Tellicherry) and New Medical Centre's Saqib Ali were adjudged best batsman and bowler respectively.
As for the magical Wasim Akram, he stressed that he would always be ready to help UAE young players.
