The 39-year-old said that she had made the decision after discovering five months ago that she was expecting her fourth child.
Cameron, whose husband took office on Tuesday was creative director for an upmarket stationery firm Smythson, but will now do part-time consultancy for the company instead.
"This is a personal decision, and something that I have been considering for some time during what has been an understandably difficult year," she said.
