County Executive Chris Collins said that there may have been as many as 50 peopleu00a0 aboard the plane and crew members had reported mechanical problems as they approachedu00a0 Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The Continental Airlines plane was arriving from Newark, New Jersey.
Unconfirmed reports from a source at the airport said that the dead included 44u00a0 passengers, four crew members and a person on the ground.
The crash resulted in a huge explosion and fire that is currently being fought by dozens of firefighters. The area has been sealed off because the aircraft is still burning.
