In trouble: John Safran pulled the stunt on Good Friday |
Devout Catholics in the country are incensed that John Safran, who is Jewish, should have commercially exploited the venerated ritual, in which two other men and a woman also took part.
They are angry that the Melbourne comedian, using an assumed name, exploited the dramatic enactment of the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ in an "immoral and disrespectful manner" for the stunt for an Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV series to be screened this year.
Safran, who reportedly cried out in agony as his palms and feet were nailed to a cross after being brought in a procession, had suffered some bleeding in his hands and feet, but was said to be "OK".
Safran and his TV crew have been threatened with deportation and forced to sign an affidavit undertaking not to use footage of the offensive ritual.
